Microsoft is rolling out Windows 11 version 26H2, the fifth major release of the operating system. Like 25H2 before it, the update ships as a small enablement package rather than a full OS upgrade, meaning installation is quick, low-risk, and shares the same platform as 24H2.
If you are already on 24H2 or 25H2, you will not see a dramatic visual overhaul on day one. Most of what makes 26H2 different has been arriving throughout 2026 via cumulative updates, with the enablement package activating version-specific features and resetting the support lifecycle to 24 months for consumer editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education.
Here is what is actually new.
Administrator Protection#
The headline security feature in 26H2 is the rollout of Administrator Protection, which strengthens how administrative privileges are handled on the system.
By default, users in the Administrators group can install apps and modify system settings without additional restrictions. Administrator Protection introduces safeguards that limit silent system-level changes and require explicit authorization for elevated actions, reducing the risk of both accidental modifications and exploitation by malware.
You can enable it through:
- Windows Security > Account Protection > Administrator protection
- Group Policy Editor (for enterprise deployments)
This feature was delayed from earlier builds and is finally shipping with 26H2.
Taskbar repositioning and resizing#
After years of complaints, Microsoft is adding support for repositioning the Taskbar:
- Move the Taskbar to the top, left, or right side of the screen via Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.
- Choose between Small and Default taskbar sizes to free up screen space on compact devices.
- Existing customizations like smaller taskbar buttons and “Never combine taskbar buttons” work across all layouts.
Flyouts, tooltips, and animations continue to originate from the Taskbar regardless of its position.
Start menu customization#
The Start menu gains new layout options:
- Choose between Small, Large, and Automatic sizes via Settings > Personalization > Start.
- The former “Recommended” section is renamed to Recent across the Start menu and Settings app.
- Independently show or hide the Pinned, Recent, and All sections.
- Option to hide the account name and profile picture from the Start menu.
- Phone Link preview lets you hover over recent messages to see their content without opening the app.
Windows Search without web results#
Windows Search is getting more control and more capability:
- Disable web searches in Windows Search via Settings > Search > Show suggested search results.
- Prevent Microsoft Store apps from appearing in search results.
- Automatic expansion of the indexing scope based on recently opened files and frequently accessed locations.
- New “Search the contents of online files” option for OneDrive and other online services.
- The taskbar Search box is slightly taller, improving usability.
Windows Update overhaul#
One of the broadest sets of changes targets Windows Update, giving users more control while improving reliability:
- Redesigned pause interface: postpone updates directly from a calendar for up to 35 days at a time, with no limit on how often you can extend the pause.
- Coordinated monthly installs: driver, .NET, and firmware updates are bundled with the monthly quality update, reducing multiple restarts to a single reboot.
- Independent power buttons: “Restart” and “Shut down” are always available separately from update actions.
- Available updates section: driver updates now include clearer category labels like display, audio, or battery.
- OOBE update skip: during initial setup you can choose to skip installing updates and reach the desktop faster.
- Improved background download coordination and automatic recovery for failed updates.
Run dialog modern redesign#
After nearly three decades of neglect, the classic Run dialog box gets a Fluent Design update:
- Rounded corners, updated spacing, wider text field.
- Recent commands section above the input box.
- Typing surfaces matching apps with icons.
- Press F4 to expand the command suggestions list.
- Optional feature: enable or disable via Settings > System > Advanced > Run dialog toggle.
File Explorer performance improvements#
- Deleting large, fragmented files is faster in certain scenarios.
- The Home page launches more quickly.
- Touch scrolling support added to the “Recommended” files carousel on touch devices.
Touchpad customization expanded#
New controls under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad:
- Adjustable right-click zone size: Default, Small, Medium, Large.
- Scroll and zoom speed adjustments.
- Automatic scrolling triggered by edge proximity or sustained pressure on supported hardware.
- Accelerated scrolling for faster navigation through long documents.
- Single-finger vertical scrolling on touchpad edges.
Accessibility and visual updates#
- Screen Tint: new accessibility feature under Settings > Accessibility > Screen Tint that applies a customizable color overlay across the entire screen. Works alongside Night Light but is mutually exclusive with Color filters.
- Pointer Indicator: low-vision feature activated with Windows + Ctrl + Shift + X that highlights the cursor position.
- Unified “donut” loading spinner replaces the legacy animation across boot, sign-in, restart, shutdown, and Windows Update.
- Redesigned Account Control flyout in the Start menu with visible subscription badges and more account information.
Task Manager: NPU and isolation columns#
Task Manager gains new optional columns for deeper hardware visibility:
- NPU and NPU Engine columns on Processes, Users, and Details pages.
- NPU Dedicated Memory and NPU Shared Memory fields on the Details page.
- Isolation column shows which applications are running inside an AppContainer.
Cloud Rebuild recovery#
A new recovery option available from the Windows Recovery Environment:
- Navigate to Troubleshoot > Cloud Rebuild in WinRE.
- Downloads a fresh image of Windows 11 and device drivers directly from Windows Update.
- Restores the correct Windows version, edition, and language without needing a bootable USB drive.
- Requires internet connectivity via Ethernet or Wi-Fi from WinRE.
Ask Copilot in taskbar (opt-in)#
An optional taskbar feature that replaces the Search box with an “Ask Copilot anything” entry point:
- Provides access to Copilot Vision and Voice.
- Floating prompt box for searching files, apps, settings, and web queries.
- Not enabled by default; must be turned on manually.
Release timeline#
Microsoft has not confirmed an exact release date, but based on the traditional September–October rollout window, Windows 11 26H2 is expected to begin shipping at the end of September or early October 2026. The rollout will follow Microsoft’s controlled deployment strategy, meaning not every PC will receive the update on day one.
The update is currently available in the Experimental channel of the Windows Insider Program under build 26300.
