What happened#
Microsoft has officially announced Windows 11, version 26H2 as its biggest update of 2026. The update is already available to Windows Insiders and is expected to reach general availability in October 2026.
This is Microsoft’s second annual feature update for Windows 11, following the same predictable and low-disruption servicing model that IT professionals have come to expect. For devices already running recent versions of Windows 11, the upgrade path should be smooth and non-intrusive.

Redesigned Windows Copilot sidebar — Microsoft has completely overhauled the Copilot experience. The sidebar now features a more natural conversational interface, better context awareness across open windows, and the ability to take actions directly from your desktop without leaving your current app.
Improved Recall functionality — The controversial Recall feature that captures periodic screenshots of your activity has been refined. Microsoft added granular privacy controls, allowing users to exclude specific apps, websites, or time periods from being captured. Recall data is now encrypted on-device by default and can be manually reviewed and deleted.
New window management features — A redesigned Snap Layouts system gives you more precise control over multi-window workflows. You can now save custom workspace configurations and switch between them instantly. The snap assist preview has also been improved to show a more accurate representation of where windows will land.
Deeper Copilot+ PC integration — If you have a Copilot+ PC (devices with an NPU capable of 40+ TOPS), 26H2 unlocks additional on-device AI features including real-time translation in supported apps, improved Cocreator in Microsoft Paint, and faster Copilot responses powered by local inference.
Shared servicing model — The update uses the same shared servicing model as recent releases, meaning it shares the same underlying codebase as other current Windows 11 versions. This reduces the size of the update and minimizes compatibility issues.

Availability#

Requirements remain the same as Windows 11: TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, a compatible 64-bit CPU (8th gen Intel or newer, AMD Ryzen 2000 or newer), minimum 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB of storage.
